Biology, which originates from the word ‘bio’ meaning life, is a branch of science that studies life. It involves the investigation of the structure, function, growth, origin, evolution, and distribution of living organisms. As vast a field of study as this is, biology spans the entire universe, beginning from bacteria to humans, and seeks to understand the mechanics of every living form.
Biology is quite a broad subject, and can be divided into different branches. Cell biology is the branch that focuses on cells as the basic building blocks of life; it examines the structure of the cell and its processes, including how cells divide, and generate energy. Another branch of biology is Genetics, which studies the inheritance, and the genes that pass these traits. Even as organisms evolve, ecology centers on the organisms with their surroundings, alongside physiology which deals with the operating systems of the living organisms.
Some of the branches of biology revolve around evolution- how organisms change and develop over time, a term largely credited to Charles Darwin. Evolution accounts for the development of new traits in a species over time, and follows a simple principle of the nature selecting the most fit for reproduction and passing on their useful traits to the succeeding generations.
As any other form of life, biology exists in the molecular form too, as it is in DNA, RNA, and proteins that contain biological information. They are responsible for biochemical reactions that drive life processes including reproduction, growth and repair.
